IT AIN'T OVER UNTIL THE FAT LADY SINGS

Young man surfing a mellow wave  on a longboard by the sunset in Canggu, Bali, Indonesia.

I’ve been pushing the edit of this photo for a couple of months now. I took it in the beginning of January this year. I had just arrived to Bali after having spent a couple of nights in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia with a group of friends. I split from the group and went to Bali a couple of days ahead. Alone.

As I was laying there, in the hostel bed, with my phone deep in the instagram dm’s. Trying to hook up a shoot with some models, any model, I realized I was a bit late to hook anything up for the day. So, I decided to grab my water housing, mask and fins, and go out and see what I could get out in the water. It was getting late and I knew I would only have about 30 minutes in the water before it would get to dark.

I paddled out into the mellow break of Old Mans in Canngu. I grabbed a couple of shots out in the far end of the break but nothing I was happy with. I knew it was getting late, the sun was just about to hit the horizon and the light was going away by the minute. I wasn’t gonna stress anything. I paddled around, and took my time. Knowing that an opportunity would show up. It always does for those that are looking for it.

I noticed a local guy, closer to the shore. The waves where much smaller in that part of the break, but I could see how he was dancing on his longboard. Walking up to the nose and back, turning and having fun. He was in his flow. I paddel closer. But by this time, the sun had already gone down and it was a bit to dark to get anything good. I shot anyways. And this is what I got.

The edit was a bit tricky because of the light conditions. I was well underexposed, but shooting RAW (as I always do) really let gave  me the option to work with the sky and bring back the colors. I edited this photo a couple of times but really wasn’t happy with the edit. I let the photo sit in my hard drive for some months and then got back to it. Sometimes that can be a good idea with some pieces. To let them sit and “marinate”. I think this was worth the wait.
